We proudly use the finest imported Spanish ingredients, as well as locally sourced produce, to create dishes that truly capture the essence of Spain. Our carefully curated wine list, developed in collaboration with our Spanish supply partners, features a unique selection of Spanish wines not commonly found in Sydney. This exquisite collection is specifically chosen to enhance and complement the vibrant flavors of our cuisine, ensuring a truly unforgettable dining experience at Alegrias.

The origin of tapas can be traced back to a time when King Alfonso XIII The Wise was recuperating from an illness, savouring wine accompanied by modest morsels of food. Upon regaining his health, the king decreed that all taverns across Spain must serve their patrons wine only if it was accompanied by a small snack. This tradition of serving tapas – an assortment of small plates and bar snacks – has since become an integral part of Spanish culture and cuisine.

At Alegrias Spanish Tapas, located in our modern Rozelle venue, we celebrate this rich culinary heritage by creating authentic and exquisite tapas. Our contemporary space blends elements of our classic Balmain location, featuring crystal chandeliers, beautiful Spanish paintings and artwork, antique furniture, and high ceilings adorned with timeless Spanish hardwood accents. Alegrias Spanish Tapas Bar & Restaurant offers a variety of dining experiences, making it the perfect destination for any occasion. During the week, our romantic candlelit tables create an intimate atmosphere for couples or small gatherings. On weekends, the venue comes alive with live Flamenco performances featuring talented dancers and musicians, transforming Alegrias into a vibrant and spirited environment. Ideal for group functions and social dining, Alegrias boasts large tables and a menu designed for sharing. From casual get-togethers to special celebrations, Alegrias delivers an unforgettable Spanish dining experience for all.

Timeline

Open

Alegrias Spanish Tapas originally opened at the back of the 150 year old historic heritage listed institute arcade in 2013. Despite being located at the back of a building where guests would have to walk through another venue to visit, it soon became a hit location.

Destination restaurant

Alegrias Spanish Tapas soon became a popular destination restaurant with guests regularly travelling from far and wide to visit. With the introduction of regular free Spanish flamenco shows and live spanish entertainment on the weekends the restaurant was almost always fully booked on Saturday nights. Over the years we perfected hosting large groups and as many guests as we could physically fit into the venue on those nights until our lease at the venue expired and we had outgrown the venue and sought a more open and visible location for us to evolve and grow.

Move

Alegrias was moved from darling St in Balmain to our new modern venue in Union place Rozelle on Terry st in late 2019. While the move was incredibly difficult and emotional, after months and months of hard work we re-opened our modern and fresh venue in November 2019. With The Sydney fires in December, followed by the covid-19 pandemic from early 2020 through to 2022, Alegrias has held on and remained trading to become one of the largest and most established restaurants on the Balmain peninsula after many other restaurants didnt survive those incredibly challenging times.

Looking Ahead

Alegrias Spanish tapas endevours to showcase the best of traditional and modern Spanish cuisine. By building strategic partnerships with the likes Estrella Damm, which is one of the biggest beer companies in Spain, we areable to provide our guests with a wonderful selection of imported Spanish and a colourful outdoor dining area reminiscent of the tapas bars of Barcelona to enjoy casual drinks and tapas. We also aim to gradually bring more events and more live entertainment to the restaurant as the restaurant continues to recover post covid-19.

Really appreciated the extra effort and the food was really good that’s the first time we have had that and we all already want to go back. Thanks To the staff for looking after us it’s very much appreciated.

Alegrias has on site parking in the Union place complex accessible by elevator. Also for larger groups there is plenty of free parking at the Hamilton St council car park off Darling st a short walk away.
