Alegrias endeavours to provide the best of authentic and modern Spanish cuisine using the best imported Spanish and local ingredients. Executive chef David Leon from Madrid takes no shortcuts in its production and presentation with everything from the sauces to the bread being made in house to deliver authentic flavours of Spain. The wine list is carefully curated in conjunction with our supply partners of wines imported from Spain which are not commonly found in Sydney to fully complement the cuisine.
The legend goes that the tradition of serving small plates and bar snacks with wine, beer and sherry – otherwise known as ‘tapas’ – began when King Alfonso XIII The Wise was recovering from an illness by drinking wine capped with morsels of simply served food. After regaining his health, he decreed that all taverns in Spain would not be allowed to serve their patrons wine unless it was accompanied by a small snack. Alegrias has evolved more towards a fine dining restaurant, however we will be opening Taberna Tapas bar to encompass half of the restaurant and outdoor dining area to provide more casual dining and drinking options. Alegrias and our Taberna Tapas bar Tapas and Bar allows our guests to indulge in a range of Spanish and Mediterranean dishes accompanied by beautiful Spanish wine and beer, ideally enjoyed with friends and family, At our new and modern Rozelle venue we have embraced a modern look with a fusion of our classic Balmain venue with our crystal chandeliers adorning the high ceilings and classic Spanish hardwood features and artwork.
Romantic candlelit tables makes for a perfect location midweek for a intimate dining, while on the weekends we often have live Flamenco shows with dancers and musicians to transform Alegrias into a lively and boisterous venue. Alegrias was always a taste of Spain in Balmain and now Rozelle.
Alegrias Spanish Tapas Bar & Restaurant is ideal for group functions with big tables and the perfect cuisine for social dining.
Alegrias Spanish Tapas soon became a popular destination restaurant with guests regularly travelling from far and wide to visit. With the introduction of regular free Spanish flamenco shows and live spanish entertainment on the weekends the restaurant was almost always fully booked on Saturday nights. Over the years we perfected hosting large groups and as many guests as we could physically fit into the venue on those nights until our lease at the venue expired and we had outgrown the venue and sought a more open and visible location for us to evolve and grow.
Alegrias was moved from darling St in Balmain to our new modern venue in Union place Rozelle on Terry st in late 2019. While the move was incredibly difficult and emotional, after months and months of hard work we re-opened our modern and fresh venue in November 2019. We have also effectively changed our name from Alegrias Spanish Tapas to simply Alegrias as we are no longer a soley tapas focused restaurant.
Having moved away from strictly traditional Spanish tapas to a more flexible and challenging style of cuisine being authentic semi fine Spanish dining we endeavour to showcase the best of traditional and modern Spanish cuisine. We will shortly introduce a separate tapas bar area and menu where our guests can enjoy more casual fare without the fine dining prices. We have partnered with Estrella Damm which is one of the biggest beer companies in Spain to be able to provide our guests with imported Spanish tap beer and a colourful outdoor dining area reminiscent of the tapas bars of Barcelona.
